Open Innovation

Think ecosystem, then product and services

Nowadays, open innovation approaches innovation as a way to create value out of one or several ecosystems, existing or to be build, rather than start the innovation process from a predefined product perspective.

Five degrees of open innovation

The traditional corporate innovation model, mainly relying on the R&D department, is in crisis. Too closed, too rigid, too slow,… The innovation model of the 21st century doesn’t comply anymore with the demands for more reactivity, more creativity and more disruption of the modern time.

Nowadays, we acknowledge five degrees of openness in innovation :

1. Research and development (R&D) collaborations

Universities and companies share scientific data and results. Those collaboration can be organised in a formal framework (within general partnership agreements, clusters or poles of competitivness). So far, this kind of open innovation is the most frequent in the business world. However, it’s very often enclosed within the R&D department and limited to technology innovation.

2.  Employee involvement in the innovations processes

Innovation is not a matter of technology only. Business model innovation, managerial innovation, services innovation, innovation in communication and marketing… are as important for any company. Often, those alternative kinds of innovation provide a company with more value to its product or services than putting on the market a raw new technology. This innovation’s second pillar involves all the employees in the innovation dynamic of the organisation. No matter the function, the skills or the hierarchy…

3. Clients’ involvement

Nothing is as good as being able to react live to any change of taste or habit in the market. Nowadays, new digital social platforms and practices allow any company to listen and involve its customers in its innovation process, transparently. The rapid caption and treatment of informations coming up from the salesforce and the retail network is another must of modern organisations. x

4. Innovation basée sur les communautés

Clusters and poles of competitivness, as already mentioned, are pre-structured innovation communities. The community innovation model can be pushed far beyond. Innovation communities can sprout spontaneously, on a ponctual basis. Idea Markets, for instance, are open sharing platform where anyone can suggest ideas or solutions of his/her own to given problems.

5. Crowdsourcing

Call the crowd. Crowdsourcing is the ultimate level of open innovation. Everyone is welcomed to take part in the innovation process. The next step is the fully distributed organisation, where the boundaries blend with the outside communities.

Open innovation leads to a model of Open Enterprise.
